Nothing to cry home about, or maybe because the food sucks. Dark nursing home type feel inside, at least the service saved it from getting one star.

I had the pasta fagoli soup, if it was good. For my main dish I had the turkey combination sandwich, it was great! My husband had a Greek hamburger, it was rare and he was not happy with it! My mother had the crab cakes with rice and green beans, and she liked it. We had coconut cream pie, and lemon meringue pie and they both were fantastic :-) They need to update their place! It's a little dumpy!

Haystacks is as close to home cooking as you can get in Wilkes Barre. The people are nice and the food is good. I have taken most people who visit me here and not one person has had a complaint. I highly recommend stopping in sometime.

First off, this is a "substance over style" kinda place, so just know that walking in. Yeah, it sorta feels like you're dining in a nursing home cafeteria, but it certainly doesn't taste the same, at least if you're stopping in for breakfast like I did. There are plenty of menu choices/combos and, although I was first leaning toward trying the Eggs Benedict, I ultimately decided on French Toast, scrambled eggs and bacon. Yeah, it sounds a little boring, but each item was done just right, which makes a huge difference for overall meal satisfaction. The fluffy eggs, perfectly fried bacon and four tender pieces of French toast with soft butter and a little maple syrup were all thumbs up in my book. The service was also very good and it barely cost me a ten spot with the added cup of coffee and tip.

All I wanted was something cheesy and bacony. My omelette was mainly stuffed with the same mushy potato cubes they use for their home fries, barely any bacon, and couldn't even find the cheese. Most disappointing omelette ever!!

Best breakfast we've found in Wilkes-Barre. Prices are not cheap, but less than the chains at the Arena Loop nearby. The food is comparable, but with more local/regional flare in the combinations and omelettes. (We only go for breakfast.) The real pleasure of Haystacks is the service, which is uniformly pleasant and professional, even when they are busy. Booths along the walls afford cozy space for chatting, while oversize tables in thecenter of the dining room accodate much larger groups. Highly recommended!

Had brunch over the weekend and unfortunately the food quality was not what I remembered. The homefries tasted off (maybe the oil was rancid?) and the housemade gravy for the countryfried steak tasted less like gravy and more like corn starch. Service was still very pleasant and the coffee was great, so they deserve and extra star for that. I'm not sure if I'll venture back anytime soon, though.

Boy can looks be deceiving. Driving by this place, one would think they are a local brand pancake house. If you've seen one, you've seen them all, right? The interior decoration is aimed at replicating the 'Perkin's' theme, and continues the pancake house theme. Which disguises perhaps, one of the better kept secrets of Wilkes-Barre. Then -- you get the menu. And wow, what a menu. They have some of the regular 'casual american restaurant items', but then there are the real gems, a wide number of very creative menu items, that frankly are outstanding. The chef claims that everything is made from scratch, no canned soups or singes made from a kit -- and with the quality of the food, you can really believe it. Even the mashed potatoes have some undefinable quality about them that shows an attention to detail. Don't come unless you are hungry as the portions are gigantic, and you will have trouble restraining yourself. The wait staff is friendly, with good service, and the owner pays a visit to most tables. I have never been here where the dining room was more than 1/3 full so you should never have trouble getting seated, and with it's proximity to the arena, that is a big plus if you are in the area for a show. Check foursquare and the times leader for the NEPA deal of the day as there are frequent, an generous discounts online. They do cater, and I a pretty sure that the owner had catered my wedding around the time he opened this place. No complaints on the catering experience, and I am sure that time has only improved their skills. Overall, should be 5 stars but for the tired pancake house decor. But by all means, don't let that stop you.

The place is okay. The food is average although the wait was a little long, which was odd since the place was pretty empty.

GREAT breakfasts-- anytime-- I stop in here whenever I get a chance-- unfortunately, with a crazy schedule where I'm on the road at 4:30 in the marnin' -- no where near as often as I like-- I am always made to feel welcome, waitstaff are friendly and personable, and they bring me gallons of GOOD coffee-- not some yuppie frou-frou cup of caramel and foam-- but real, damn good everyday workingman's friend COFFEE-- The breakfast fare is sublime, the prices moderate, the parking plentiful-- and for us FOGs-- close to the VAMC. Finest kind!

Good food and simple menu. People are nice in here. A lot of old timers dine here. Its a nice calm place. Good for a family outing. You might notice Chip Coffey from the psychic kids show serving your table, and if its not him then i found his long lost twin brother..... Im dead serious. Go in and ask for his autograph.

Well, despite saying we wouldn't go back, we went back. I'm not sure why. Really, they do have the best pancakes and omelets so if you can go for breakfast please do. However my husband ordered "homemade meatloaf" with mashed potatoes and bourbon gravy. What he got was, two slices of frozen meatloaf (like what you would find in a Stouffers frozen meal), mashed potatoes, and a terrible gravy that tasted like it was canned brown gravy with some bourbon BBQ sauce stirred in. It was sweet and very odd. The waitress initially disputed our concerns but came back from the kitchen offering to take half of the price of his meal off. My meal was fine, but you can't really screw up fried shrimp and french fries. Lesson learned: If you're going to go for dinner.... better get something that is really hard to ruin.

Visiting the area to hike at Rickett's Glen and found this great breakfast spot. Huge breakfast menu with tons of tasty options. The straight up pancakes were thick and chewy and served with hot maple syrup. Excellent.

Yummy home-made food! I was expecting a plain old diner by the look of the place, but the food is better than diner food. Home-made breakfast sausage and chicken tenders (NOT frozen from a bag!) were surprising and yummy. Didn't get 5 stars because the French fries, while very flavorful, we're pretty mushy. But that seems to be the norm for this area.

I was here once when not long after it opened. I had a BLT that had a bad smell to it. Maybe bad lettuce. I never went back.

Pulling into the parking lot, we look at each other quizzically - this is the place that Yelp has such good ratings for???? Don't let the outside (or the inside for that matter of fact - sort of not quite retro 70's) fool you! WONDERFUL home made stick to your ribs food with corn bread to die for! I had the "Blooming Burger" - char broiled, huge, topped with lettuce (not iceberg), tomato and gigundo home made onion rings - topped off with blooming onion sauce with a punch! Pickled beets on the side (yes, home made with onion) in a dish that I requested instead of fries and lots of pickle slices - artistically arranged to fill in the area where the fries would have been :-). My husband had the haddock special which he loved - amazingly because it was perfectly baked with a ratatouille spicy topping. My husband is not one for veggie toppings ever but he loved this one! Lots of flavor and spice but not so spicy as to cover up the fish flavor. Corn nuggets (how do they do them???) and cornbread. When he remarked on how good the corn bread was, our server brought him another 2 slices - yes! (I got to have one, grabbed it before he could slap my hand). Suffice it to say, when ever we're near Wilkes Barre, we'll be stopping in. It's an area full of chain restaurants...no thanks - Haystacks is the real deal!

So walking In at first, you think typical diner...Well here's the short version...The food is phenomenal. We have started to go there 2 times a week now. Wednesday's for their seafood night (steamed clams are excellent) and on Saturdays for lunch (well usually breakfast). Highly recommend Haystacks oh and 1 more thing, the staff and the owner are great!
